Blueist Team

Founder

Brad McDonald, Past President of the San Fernando Chapter of the AIA, is the founder of Blueist. He sets a high standard of instruction with an emphasis on real-world practical applications. As an owner of Reveal Studios, he led the design of many award-winning projects, including single and multi-family residences, churches, restaurants, and international projects for Disney Imagineering.

Principal Instructor

James O. Ward

Jim graduated from Arizona State University in 1970 and spent ten years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve Corps of Engineers. In the 1980s, Jim was principal at Varney Sexton Lunsford Aye Associates in Phoenix, where he designed many municipal buildings. In 1991 he became a certified AutoCAD instructor, and then worked with the Southwest Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) until 2006, where he evangelized the use of AutoCAD, leading the effort to train and distribute access to AutoCAD across the command, while also supervising the design and construction of a wide variety of naval facilities. Following his love of teaching and training young architects, Jim went on to provide in-office training, mentoring, and consultation to the NAVFAC staff, developing video training modules with voiceover to supplement live training.

System

Blueist’s system network is Advance2000, providing an efficient way to work with high performance graphics applications, large storage demands, faster project delivery, and more effective collaboration. Advance2000 features include Building Information Model (BIM), the Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collaboration Hub, and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC), all in the cloud. Many Advance2000 features are available on mobile devices, allowing students to work on projects anywhere.

Aural Architecture: Everything Old is New Again

Acoustics have been a key element of architecture for at least 3,000 years. Actors could be clearly heard by audience members in the last row – 60 meters away from the stage – of ancient open-air Greek theatres. Temples, churches and other sacred spaces were built with soaring rounded ceilings to amplify music, song and voice.

BIM: A Boon or Bane to Innovative Design?

What is the significance of tactile experience in the process of design? As BIM (building information modeling) takes over from traditional design processes of drawing and building physical 3-D models, some architects and designers question whether computer modeling can hope to inspire innovative design. Computers feel inherently impersonal to many, and everyone has experienced the “mistake” in molding a 3-D model by hand that turned into a distinctive design feature. Traditionalists insist that removing these tactile processes from design effectively quashes true innovation and the joy of artistic creation.

Intelligent Deconstruction

Green architecture and design need to take the entire lifecycle of a structure into account, from energy-efficient engineering to materials planning and acquisition to construction… pretty basic, right? Often overlooked by architects, designers and contractors is a building’s end-of-life. While it’s tempting to think of the space you’ve labored to create as lasting forever, the reality is everything comes to an end. And, with ever-changing work and use requirements, renovation is never far off.

Revit Revealed

While Revit and BIM (building information modeling) are often used almost interchangeably – and Autodesk is certainly happy to support the confusion – Revit is simply one of several tools that allow you to use BIM effectively in your building projects.
